Victory over Rivalry

The Greenwood field hockey team had been anticipating Thursday the 4th’s game against Newport since the PeCo tournament on Saturday, August 30th. The team walked into school Thursday morning excited, confident, and dressed to impress. Don’t let their dresses fool you, at seven o’clock when it was game time; hair was tied up, shin guards were on, mouth guards were in place, and game faces were intense.

The first half was a battle, both teams had shown up to make a statement. They played what seemed like a tennis match, running back and forth, up and down the field. The girls did their best and gained many penalty corners but just couldn’t seem to get off a solid shot. The second half of the game was a totally different story. The team, although tired, was motivated. Within the first three minutes Maddy Pyle took the ball down the right side of the field and got it to Alix Fegley inside the circle. From the sideline you saw a scramble of white and royal blue jerseys around the goal, sticks flying, and feet moving, then suddenly the sweet sound of the ball smacking the backside of the cage. Twenty three minutes later another goal was scored by birthday girl, Kelsey Keener, who received the ball from Mackenzie Drew. The game ended four minutes later with Greenwood’s winning score of two to zero.

The Jv team started out the night strong with a goal from number seventeen Kiera Wittle with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Seven minutes later the team received a penalty stroke taken by Morgan Burkepile. Burkepile’s shot was beautifully placed in the top left corner of the cage, making the score at the end of the first half 2-0. The game was back and forth for most of the second half. With five minutes to go Newport beat the team down the field and took a shot, tripping myself, in goal, and ricocheting off a player from the opposing team into the goal. Greenwood’s JV won the game 2-1.
